Advancing Stewardship With a New Warehouse and Odoo 16

CURE Children’s Hospital of Uganda took a significant step forward in strengthening the systems that support patient care behind the scenes. With the commissioning of a new warehouse and the rollout of Odoo 16, an advanced inventory and supply chain management platform, the hospital improved how medical supplies and equipment are managed, how departments coordinate, and how resources entrusted to CURE Uganda are stewarded in service of vulnerable children in need.

A Major Upgrade in Logistics

The new warehouse represents a major upgrade in logistics capacity. Built to meet modern hospital standards, it provides safe, spacious, and well-organized storage for both medical and non-medical supplies. Its layout ensures smooth flow from receiving to distribution, and proper environmental conditions for sensitive equipment and medicines. Improved lighting, shelving, and labeling allow staff to locate and dispatch items quickly, reducing delays and inefficiencies.

For the nursing team, these improvements directly affect daily work on the wards and in clinical units. Reliable access to medicines and consumables is essential for quality patient care, and the new systems brought much-needed clarity and consistency.

Anita Kirunda Akol, the Nurse Manager at CURE Uganda, noted that the change was immediate and practical:

“For nursing, having the right supplies at the right time is not a luxury, it’s what allows us to do our work well. With the new warehouse and Odoo system, we no longer have to guess what is available or worry about delays. Medicines, consumables, and equipment are easier to track, easier to access, and properly accounted for. This system supports our nurses to focus on patients, knowing that the supplies they need are well managed and reliable.”

Organized shelving, clearly labeled stock, and spacious storage — a behind-the-scenes look at the systems that allow CURE Uganda’s clinical teams to focus on what matters most: the patients.

Previously, limited space and decentralized storage sometimes created challenges in locating or verifying essential supplies. The new centralized warehouse transformed that reality. Departments were able to plan better, track usage more accurately, and reduce waste, duplication, and emergency procurement. Coordination among the pharmacy, procurement, and clinical departments improved, allowing patient care to continue without unnecessary interruptions.

Modernizing with Odoo 16

Alongside the physical upgrade was the full integration of Odoo 16, a digital system that modernized how inventory is planned, monitored, and reported. Odoo provides real-time visibility into stock levels, expiry dates, and reorder points, helping teams ensure that critical supplies are available when needed. The system also automates key processes such as purchase requests, approvals, supplier management, and reporting, reducing manual workload and strengthening accountability.

For the surgical teams, this integration had a direct impact on how operating theatres are prepared and how surgeries are scheduled and supported.

Dr. Emmanuel Wegoye, Medical Director at CURE Uganda, emphasized the clinical value of these improvements:

“Surgery depends on precision, planning, and consistency, and that does not start in the operating room. It starts with systems. This upgrade has strengthened how we prepare for surgery, manage surgical supplies, and ensure continuity of care. When inventory is well organized and visible in real time, the operating theatre runs more smoothly, procedures are not delayed, and patient safety is better protected.”

A Commitment to Stewardship

By combining a modern warehouse with a robust digital platform, CURE Uganda built a stronger and more transparent supply chain. Every item can now be tracked from arrival to use, reinforcing responsible stewardship and enabling better forecasting and planning. This level of traceability supports compliance, donor accountability, and smarter use of limited resources.

For CURE’s leadership, these improvements reflected a deeper commitment to integrity and excellence across the organization.

Executive Director Tim Erickson underscored the importance of the upgrade beyond operations alone:

“At CURE Uganda, we take stewardship seriously because lives depend on it. When people give to this work, they are trusting us to use those resources well. The new warehouse and Odoo system help us do that more faithfully by strengthening how we plan, track, and manage what we have. These systems may not be visible to patients, but they directly support the care those patients receive.”

Ultimately, these developments directly supported CURE Uganda’s mission to provide timely, high-quality neurosurgical care to vulnerable children. Greater efficiency meant fewer delays, better preparation, and more consistent care for patients and families who depend on CURE.
